Temporary Redesign
Since Aaron and I are taking a bit longer to launch the new site, I’ve updated the design with our new logo and colors. Our current internships have been keeping us really busy, but as soon as we can, we’ll get on launching the new site that will include a lot of new features for listeners. Thank you for your continued support.
This week on the show we talked to Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co about his life and his design work. We got to hear Aaron’s story from growing up, to design school, to his work today.
As always, you can email us at readbetweentheleading@gmail.com and find us on twitter @rbtlshow.

Why so long?
Ep. 19 took a bit longer to edit, as well as approve, and once the process was complete Matt and I were both busy for a few days during the week. We apologize for another week long gap, but Ep. 19 is finally tidied up and ready to go. It will be up tonight some time in the wee hours, EST time.
Tomorrow, we’re recording with Nick Sherman of MyFonts! And that one might just be up tomorrow—so who knows, no promises, but you could get two great episodes in one weekend.
Thanks for everything guys, and despite the time it took to get this one out, enjoy it, and please keep listening!
Aaron
This week on the show we talk all about type on the web. We discuss recent developments like Typekit, Font Bureau’s Permission table, and Spiekermann’s new typeface Axel. We also talk a bit about our own idea for a non-profit type foundry, a foundry based on donations that commissions type designers to design web fonts we can release for free on the web.
We’d love to hear your feedback about our non-profit type foundry idea. We’d also love to hear any news (or any corrections) about some of this new technology we’re talking about. Feel free to leave us a comment here, email us at readbetweentheleading@gmail.com, or find us on twitter @rbtlshow.

This week on the show we begin a discussion on the topic of sustainable design. We talk about approaching sustainable or “green” design as a way of thinking, bucking the trend of just calling something “green,” and using this conversation as a jumping point for more efficient and effective design thinking.
We’d love to hear your feedback, so reply to us on twitter @rbtlshow, email us at readbetweentheleading@gmail.com, or leave us a message at 646-402-5686 ext 20248. We want examples of great sustainable design, suggestions for designers we could have on the show that are doing great things for sustainable for design, or your thoughts on the topic.

On this episode we discuss data visualization as the new path and frontier for graphic design, and how graphic design has treated communication of information in the past. We also discuss the definition of graphic design, focusing on Meggs’ quote, and specifically the idea of designers creating artifacts that document human experience.
We unveil our final refined mark and discuss the process we took to get there, and finally we answer a question and review some previous discussions from our spec work episode, 15.
As always, we ask for your comments and love hearing from you. Feel free to call, send in an mp3 or text comment to readbetweentheleading@gmail.com, or find us on twitter @rbtlshow.

This week on the show we were joined by web and graphic designer Jason Santa Maria. We got a chance to talk to Jason about his work at Happy Cog, his personal work, projects like the Wordpress admin, the differences in designing for print and web, and we got to ask him some listener questions. We also announced the winner of the MyFonts $100 gift certificate.
As always, give us an email at readbetweentheleading@gmail.com, send us a tweet @rbtlshow, or give us a call at 646-402-5686 ext 20248. We’re always looking for interesting design stories, so call or send them in.
Note: We apologize for the for the occasional clicking sound in the background. We promise no one was typing, clicking a mouse, clicking a pen or attempting to do anything distracting during the interview, it was just an ambient sound picked up by a mic that we couldn’t completely equalize or gate out. As always, we’re striving for the best audio quality we can get, but every once in a while we hit a slight speed bump. Thank you for your continued patience and support.

On this episode we talked all about spec work. We talked about crowd sourcing design, the devaluation of design, the client perspective, and whether or not we need to change our views on spec work.
We also announced the extension of our prize giveaway. So if you want to win a $100 gift certificate to MyFonts, you can do so by answering one of our 3 questions: 1) What’s your best client or design school story? 2) What was an inspirational turning point in your life? 3) What’s your take on spec work?
You can answer by calling us at 646-402-5686 extension 20248, emailing an mp3 to readbetweentheleading@gmail.com, or posting a video response to our question on YouTube.
